So Alberta is now in a recession. Moreover, the government is facing a 1 billion dollar deficit, 6 months after having predicted a 8.5 billion dollar surplus.
This shouldn't be a problem, because Alberta should have been putting money away to protect its economy on the inevitable rainy day. But this hasn't really happened. Actually, all Alberta has managed to put into its so called "Heritage Fund" since its inception in 1976 is 14 billion dollars. Norway in contrast, whose population is equivalent to Alberta's, has put approximately 300 billion dollars into a sovereign wealth fund since 1990.
If the Alberta economy keeps on sinking, and the supposedly "prudent", "conservative", "steady" Stelmach government is forced to run more deficits, it will be entirely their fault.
